The fire broke out at approximately 11:45 a.m. at 458 Avenue C, Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Upon arrival, Bayonne firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from a bedroom inside one of the apartments, officials said.

The fire quickly spread to several adjoining structures, escalating to five alarms before crews were able to bring it under control, authorities said.

No injuries or fatalities were reported, but six apartments sustained damage, Suarez said. The fire displaced 17 residents, who are now receiving assistance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department. Officials confirmed the fire originated in a bedroom but have not disclosed further details.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345 or submit a tip online at hudsoncountyprosecutorsofficenj.org/homicide-tip. All tips will be kept confidential, authorities said.
